Grow Yew hedging in free draining soil and in a sunny or semi shaded position. For the best start, dig out a trench 30cm deep by 30cm wide. Incorporate well rotted manure or compost in the base of the trench before planting and backfilling. Yew will grow at a rate of about 25cm a year. Start clipping lightly after 2 years in order to shape the hedge. Clip in mid to late Summer in order to maintain the hedge. Keep the area along the hedge weed free in order to give the hedge the best start. Water well in dry periods through Spring, Summer and Autumn until the hedge is established. Be careful not to over-water.

In normal conditions, a Yew hedge will take around 5 years from planting to form an established hedge.
